   Sarah Michelle Gellar 1977. április 14-én született New York City-ben. Miután 1984-ben a szülei elváltak, Sarah-t édesanyja, Rosellen nevelte. Apja, Arthur Gellar 2001. októberében hunyt el.
   Sarah sorsa már 4 éves korában eldőlt, amikor egy ügynök meglátta őt enni egy étteremben. Filmes debütálása az "Invasion of Privacy" c. tv-filmben történt, majd számos tv-shows-ban és sorozatban feltűnt: The Guiding Light, Crossbow, Spenser: For Hire.
   Olyan kisebb filmszerepek után, mint az "Over the Brooklyn Bridge" vagy a "High Stakes", Sarah-t választották Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy kamaszkori alakítójának az 1991-es "A Woman Named Jackie" c. tv-filmbe. Szerepelt a rövid életű 1992-es tv-drámában, a "Swans Crossing"-ban Mira Sorvino mellett.
   Akár tv-s veteránnak is nevezhetnénk, hiszen legalább 100 tv-reklámban szerepelt (többek közt a McDonald's hirdetésében is), illetve szappanoperákban, mint pl. "All My Children" (itt barátkozott össze Kelly Ripa színésznővel, aki szerint Sarah jóval érettebb volt a koránál). Sarah Emmy-díjat kapott Erica Kane lányának alakítójaként. Először Sarah-nak kínálták fel Juliet szerepét az 1996-os "Romeo + Juliet"-ben, amelyet kénytelen volt átadni Claire Danes-nek, mivel el volt kötelezve az "All My Children" sorozatnak.
   De kárpótlásul Sarah hamarosan nagyobb szerepet kapott. Először Cordelia szerepét célozta meg a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" sorozatban, de a meghallgatás után ráosztották a főszerepet. Így Sarah vámpírokat kezdett öldösni 1997-től kezdve, s a játékáért sok elismerést kapott. Ebben nagy szerepe volt annak, hogy a színésznő 5 évig Tae Kwon Do-zott, kickboxolt, boxolt, tanult utcai harcművészetet és gimnasztikázott.
   A Buffy nagy sikere ellenére Sarah a '90-es évek végén inkább a mozi felé fordult, és szerepelt olyan nagy sikerű filmekben, mint az "I Know What You Did Last Summer" vagy a "Cruel Intentions", és más tinifilmekben, mint a "Scream 2" vagy a "Simply Irresistible". Szerepet kapott Freddie Prinze Jr. mellett a "She's All That"-ben.
   Ami Freddie-t illeti, nagyon jó barátok lettek az "I Know What You Did Last Summer" forgatásán, sőt komolyabb viszonyba is kerültek, és 2001. április 14-én Sarah 24. születésnapján bejelentették eljegyzésüket. Jelenleg Los Angeles-ben élnek.
   Sarah legutóbbi filmszerepe a szexi Daphne Blake-ként a Scooby Doo filmváltozatában (ismét Freddie Prinze Jr.-ral) szintén a sokat ígérő karrier egyik lépcsőfoka.
   A színésznő mellékszerepeket játszott a "Harvard Man"-ben, "Happily N'Ever After"-ben (Ella hangjaként), a tv-ben pedig készül a 2004-es "A Light Knight's Odyssey"-re.
